Advice & Guidance
CRIME TYPE: SARS-22
Knife Crime
It is illegal to carry a knife in public without good reason, and possession carries a maximum of four years in prison. Zombie knives were banned in September 2024 and ninja swords followed on 1 August 2025, with up to two years for possessing, selling, making or importing a banned weapon. Most knife crime involves people who know each other, and carrying a knife makes you more likely to be seriously hurt.
01
The law
- Carrying a knife or bladed article in public without good reason — up to 4 years in prison.
- Threatening someone with a blade in public — up to 4 years in prison.
- Selling a knife to someone under 18 is an offence.
- Zombie knives (banned September 2024) and ninja swords (banned 1 August 2025) — up to 2 years for possession, sale, manufacture or import.
- Police can stop and search someone where there are reasonable grounds to suspect they carry a weapon.
02
Reducing the risk
- Do not carry a knife — including for protection. It is far more likely to be used against you.
- Do not keep knives on display in vehicles or by doors at home.
- Surrender unwanted knives safely through police surrender arrangements rather than keeping them.
- If you know someone carries a knife, tell the police or Crimestoppers — you may prevent a serious injury.
03
Warning signs in young people
- Carrying a knife for status or out of fear.
- Unexplained injuries, or clothing worn to conceal something.
- Secrecy about where they go; new older associates or unexplained cash and phones.
- Involvement in county lines or other exploitation — carrying is often coerced.
- Withdrawing from school, family or usual activities.
04
How to report
