Advice & Guidance
CRIME TYPE: SARS-01
Anti-Social Behaviour
Anti-social behaviour (ASB) is conduct that has caused, or is likely to cause, harassment, alarm or distress to one or more persons not of the same household as the perpetrator. It ranges from noise nuisance and verbal abuse to vandalism and threatening behaviour. You are not alone — there are clear avenues for support and resolution.
01
Identify & document the behaviour
Keep a detailed record of every incident — date, time, location, what happened, who was involved, and any witnesses. Gather evidence such as photos, videos, or audio where safe, and assess how the behaviour is affecting your health and daily life.
02
Report to the correct authority
- Police — 999 in an emergency (threatened, or a crime such as vandalism/assault in progress); 101 or online for non-emergencies.
- Local Authority — noise nuisance, fly-tipping, abandoned vehicles, graffiti, neighbour disputes.
- Landlord — incidents in or near rented property; landlords must act on tenancy breaches.
- Crimestoppers — report criminal behaviour anonymously on 0800 555 111.
03
Seek support & advice
- Victim Support — 0808 168 9111 (free, confidential).
- ASB Help — advice for victims of ASB in England & Wales.
- Citizens Advice — your rights and options.
- Samaritans — 116 123, free 24/7.
04
Other options
- Mediation to facilitate a resolution with the perpetrator.
- ASB Case Review (Community Trigger) — after 3+ reports in 6 months with no satisfactory response.
- Legal action (e.g. injunction) as a last resort.
