Types of car crime
- Theft of a vehicle — increasingly via key cloning and relay attacks.
- Theft from a vehicle — belongings, devices, tools, or parts.
- Damage / vandalism — broken windows, scratched paint, slashed tyres.
- Parts theft — catalytic converters, number plates, headlights, alloy wheels.
- Keyless car theft (relay attacks) — amplifying the key fob signal.
- Carjacking — forceful taking of a vehicle, often involving violence.
02
How to prevent
- Always lock all doors, windows and the boot; double-check with the handle (signal jamming).
- Remove valuables from sight; wipe suction-cup marks; turn off Bluetooth on devices.
- Park in well-lit, busy areas with CCTV.
- Use tamper-resistant screws on number plates and locking wheel nuts.
- Store keys far from doors/windows; use a signal-blocking Faraday bag.
- Turn off wireless key signals where possible; use a steering wheel lock.
- Install a Thatcham-approved alarm/immobiliser and consider a tracker.
- Fit a lockable cover on the OBD port; never leave V5C/insurance docs in the car.
03
Where to report
- 999 if the crime is in progress or there is a threat to safety.
- 101 or online if already occurred.
- Provide vehicle make, model, colour, registration, VIN, and details of damage/stolen items.
- Keep the crime reference number; inform your insurer.
