Advice & Guidance
CRIME TYPE: SARS-02
Bicycle Theft
Bicycle theft is a significant problem in the UK — a bicycle is reportedly stolen every minute, and fewer than 5% of stolen bikes are returned to their owners. Hotspots include London, Bristol, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Cardiff, but theft can occur anywhere.
01
The problem
- A bike stolen every minute in the UK.
- Less than 5% of stolen bikes recovered.
- Cyclists more likely to lose a bike than motorcyclists or car owners.
- Commonly stolen from public racks, stations, and home (sheds/garages).
- A large proportion of stolen bikes were locked — cable locks offer little protection.
02
How to prevent
- Invest in a Sold Secure Gold D-lock (budget £40+); use two different lock types.
- Double-lock the frame and both wheels to an immovable stand.
- Secure removable parts; take lights and saddle with you.
- Park in well-lit, CCTV-covered areas.
- Register your frame number on BikeRegister or Immobilise.
- Security-mark your bike and mark the frame with your postcode.
- At home, lock to a ground anchor and keep bikes out of sight.
- Insure your bike; record frame number, make, model and photos.
03
Where to report
- Online via your police force’s reporting form.
- 101 for non-emergencies; 999 if you witness the theft in progress.
- Report as stolen on BikeRegister even if not previously registered.
- Inform your insurer with the crime reference number.
- Monitor eBay, Gumtree, Facebook Marketplace — never retrieve yourself; contact police.
