Advice & Guidance
CRIME TYPE: SARS-15
Scams
Scams are deceptive schemes designed to defraud individuals of money, personal information, or both. Scammers are increasingly sophisticated, using AI, deepfakes and pressure tactics. Millions are targeted each year, with billions lost annually in the UK.
01
Common types
- Phishing — email, SMS (smishing) and phone (vishing) scams impersonating banks, HMRC, deliveries.
- Investment scams — high-return, low-risk (often crypto).
- Romance scams — building trust then asking for money.
- Impersonation — HMRC, police/court, tech support.
- Prize/lottery, doorstep rogue-trader, and online shopping/auction scams.
- Pension scams; social-media scams; QR-code (quishing) scams.
- AI voice-cloning scams mimicking loved ones in distress.
02
How to minimise risk
- Be suspicious of unsolicited contact; never share bank details, PINs or passwords.
- Resist pressure to act quickly — take your time.
- Verify identity independently using official channels.
- Be cautious of "too good to be true" offers.
- Use strong, unique passwords and enable MFA.
- Keep software and antivirus updated.
- Trust your gut — if it feels wrong, it probably is.
03
How to report
- Action Fraud — 0300 123 2040 (national reporting centre).
- Contact your bank immediately if your account is compromised.
- Forward scam texts to 7726 (your network).
