Advice & Guidance
CRIME TYPE: SARS-08
Fly-Tipping
Fly-tipping is the illegal dumping of waste onto land with no licence to accept it. It ranges from small bags of household waste to large quantities of commercial or hazardous refuse, and is a significant environmental crime under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
01
The impact
- Pollution of soil, water and air; harm to wildlife and habitats.
- Pest-borne disease; visual pollution reducing quality of life.
- Devalued property and increased fear of crime.
- Costly clean-up and enforcement borne by councils and taxpayers.
02
How to minimise
- Use accessible household waste recycling centres and kerbside collections.
- Know how to dispose of each waste type legally.
- Support CCTV and patrols at hotspots; report offenders.
- Landowners: secure property and report fly-tipping.
03
How to report
- Your local council — usually the first point of contact (online forms).
- Environment Agency — large-scale or hazardous waste, or organised activity.
- Police on 101 if you witness it in progress involving a vehicle.
- Provide: location, waste type/quantity, date/time, vehicle and individual descriptions, and photos if safe.
